Spool Camera accessibility

Reviewed 2026-10-14

Spool is a twelve-frame film camera for iPhone and iPhone Duo. Its dials, focus racks, and roll ritual now speak to VoiceOver, sharpen under Increase Contrast, and enlarge with Large Content Viewer, while the camera body looks and handles exactly as before.

Larger Text In progress The camera deck uses fixed engraved type sized to the body; Large Content Viewer shows the counters and readouts at accessibility sizes.
Dark Interface Supported

Sufficient Contrast In progress With Increase Contrast on, labels and secondary text reach 4.5:1; dimmed neighbouring dial values still fall short.

Common tasks we test

A feature is marked supported only when all of these work with it on that device.

  • Loading a roll from the film cabinet and winding to frame 1
  • Choosing a lens on the turret
  • Racking focus on the focus ruler or the Duo focus dial
  • Setting aperture and shutter, including Bulb
  • Releasing the shutter and advancing the film
  • Finishing the roll, winding the backing paper, and developing
  • Viewing the contact sheet and saving frames to Photos
  • Changing camera options in Settings

How it works

VoiceOver

Aperture, shutter, the cover-rail wheel, and both focus racks are adjustable: swipe up or down to step one detent, and focus walks the same distance markings a drag lands on, with the same click. After each release VoiceOver says "Frame 3 of 12 exposed. Advance film.", then "Ready for frame 4 of 12.", and it tells you when the roll is complete and when a Bulb exposure opens and closes.

Increase Contrast

Turn on Increase Contrast and Spool brightens its hairlines, borders, and engraved captions, and draws the etched horizon, the meter crosshair, and the loupe ring heavier. With the setting off, the darkroom palette is unchanged.

Large Content Viewer

At the accessibility text sizes, touch and hold the frame counter, the exposure readout, the Bulb timer, the cover-rail readouts, or the iPhone Duo side tabs to see them enlarged in the centre of the screen.

Colour and motion

The meter never relies on colour alone: the needle position and the UNDER and OVER marks carry the reading, and the frame counter shows exposed frames as filled. With Reduce Motion on, the shutter blink, the pulsing advance lever, the Bulb lamp, the developing glass, and the splash spool stop moving and show their final state.
